Moody Theater and Google Field Trip

Overview:

We will tour the Moody Theater in downtown Austin on Tuesday March 3, (this is a B day). This field trip will allow students the opportunity to tour the facility, meet with staffers. After the tour at the Moody Theater, we will tour the Google offices, which are a block away on 2nd Street.

Qualifying students must have:

  • Teacher permission from missed classes (5th through 7th period)
  • Parent Signature and Contact Number.
  • A photo ID badge that they can wear on a lanyard.
Students attending this field trip will get to tour the state-of-the-art theater and broadcasting facilities where Austin City Limits Live is filmed. There is also a set of impressive photo galleries focused on famous musicians. An Operations Manager at the Moody Theater will lead the tour and talk about the types of jobs in media production that are available at the theater and the entertainment industry at large.

From the Moody Theater website:

  • Home of the KLRU-TV produced PBS program, Austin City Limits, the longest running music series in American television history.
  • On the Mezzanine level you will find the Keller Pfluger Gallery, featuring the photography of longtime Austin City Limits’ staff photographer, Scott Newton. All of the featured photography is the work of Scott Newton and has helped contribute to the iconic style of Austin City Limits for almost 40 years.
  • The balcony level features the “Jack & Jim” Gallery, the largest exhibition of works from the estate of legendary photographer Jim Marshall.
  • The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum designated the television show, Austin City Limits an official rock and roll landmark. The official plaque is on display backstage and out in front of the venue on Lavaca Street.

Google Tour

After the theater tour, students will walk down the street to the Google Austin offices at 500 W 2nd Street. Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has consolidated nearly all of its Austin- area workers in the skyscraper. It currently occupies floors 25 through 29 and will move into the 23rd and 24th floors in January. It also plans to occupy floors 20 through 22 at some point — it has leased 300,000 square feet in all on the top 10 floors.

Google has packed the skyscraper with cutting-edge design and amenities. It offers a wellness program that includes free massages. There are multiple cafeterias serving a rotating menu — including, in a nod to Austin's favorite dish, a daily taco variation.

We are off to new adventures this year with some new priorities and some big changes.

But before we go to far, we should get to know each other better.

D-Ice Breakers

Let's roll the dice and answer one of the questions listed on the handout listed below:

SCAVENGER HUNT!

In groups of four or five, you will work to complete the scavenger hunt activity.

There are rules:
  1. You will have 20 minutes to complete the scavenger hunt.
  2. Students should answer the scavenger hunt questions on a separate piece of paper.
  3. Just like in sports, close doesn't cut it. So that means that all names of people must be spelled correctly or it doesn't count.
  4. Your team may send one student out to find an answer, but they must be back in 5 minutes. If they take longer than five minutes, whatever information they get cannot be used.
  5. When time runs out, all forms must be turned into Mr. Doerr before 20 minutes runs out.
HINT: There is a folder on the the Newspaper Drive labeled Scavenger Hunt. These documents could be very useful for you!
